Why Reconnecting with Your Inner Child Can Transform Your Creative Process
Facing Resistance Is Part of the Journey
One of the most profound experiences I witness in coaching artists is when they confront resistance—especially when it comes to reconnecting with their younger selves. I remember Yify Zhang, a participant in our six-month Compass program, who was asked to find a picture of herself as a young child and really look at it. At first, there was a lot of pushback. That adult part of her was hesitant, protective, and frankly scared to revisit that vulnerable time.
This resistance is natural. We often build walls around parts of ourselves that feel uncomfortable or unsafe. But leaning into that discomfort is the first step toward true creative freedom.
The Power of Strong Intention
What made the difference for Yify was her intention. She wasn’t just doing the exercise because it was part of a program—she genuinely wanted to see whatever was causing the discomfort. That intention gave her the courage to stay present with those feelings, and slowly, memories began to resurface.
She reconnected with a bold, fearless child—a version of herself she had tucked away. This was a pivotal moment that opened a new door in her music and creative expression.
From Perfectionism to Play
One of the biggest creative blocks I see is perfectionism. It’s paralyzing. Yify shared how she used to get stuck endlessly judging her work, never feeling “good enough” to finish or start new songs. But reconnecting with her inner child—who craved freedom and play—shifted her approach completely.
Now, she commits to writing at least one song every day, regardless of the outcome. Some of these songs aren’t meant for the world; they’re exercises in play, healing, and creative release. This daily practice not only helps her improve but makes creating sustainable and joyful.
Why Play Is Essential for Creative Healing
Play isn’t just for kids—it’s a powerful tool for adults too, especially artists. Science shows that play enhances learning and creativity. When we allow ourselves to play with intention, we heal, we explore, and we expand our creative boundaries.
For many artists, especially those in Compass, embracing play has led to breakthroughs in understanding their unique sonic palette and creative voice. It’s through this playful exploration that many discover surprising new directions in their work.
The Depth That Hooks Your Audience
In today’s noisy world, flashy marketing might catch an eye, but it’s depth and authenticity that truly hook an audience. Artists who do the inner work and bring their whole selves—including the messy, imperfect parts—into their art create a magnetic pull that’s undeniable.
Yify’s upcoming work, set to release in early 2026, carries the wisdom and spirit of her reclaimed inner child. It’s mystical, bold, and grounded in deep personal storytelling—qualities that naturally draw listeners in and invite them on the journey.
A Call to Artists: Lean Into Discomfort and Play
If you’re feeling stuck, blocked, or overwhelmed, I encourage you to lean into the parts of yourself you’ve been avoiding. That discomfort is a gateway, not a wall.
Make space for play in your process. Write bad songs. Make mistakes. Let go of judgment. The messy, imperfect, and playful moments are where healing and magic happen—and where your strongest, most authentic work lives.
