Emotional Truth in Songwriting: Vulnerability, Metaphor, and the Magic of Connection
The number one thing I teach and believe as a songwriter is this: authenticity matters. Vulnerability matters. Truth matters.
Now, I’ll be the first to say—not all successful songs are deeply vulnerable. Some major hits reveal very little. And that’s okay. How deeply you choose to go is up to you.
But if you want to move people… to have someone tattoo your lyrics on their skin or pull their car over in tears… emotional truth is the key.
That doesn’t mean you need to lay out your personal plot line. You can tell the truth without spilling every detail. That’s the power of songwriting—you can cloak your truth in metaphor, imagery, and narrative.
For example, I have a song called "Old Familiar" on my live EP. On the surface, it sounds like it’s about an unhealthy relationship—someone keeps coming back, and the speaker is saying “no more.”
Welcome back, I hear the screen door
Doesn't seem so long and you're back for more
And don't you know, I don't want you anymore...
But the truth?
That song is actually about loneliness—that deep, aching, familiar kind of loneliness that settles in and becomes familiar.
I wrote it in the framework of a relationship, but the emotional core was my personal experience with isolation. And someone once told me they heard the song while driving, had to pull over, and cried. That’s the kind of connection we’re all hoping to make as artists.
It wasn’t about telling my literal story. It was about conveying the feeling, and that’s what moved them.
So here’s the takeaway:
You can be direct like Tori Amos, who once wrote plainly about her trauma. Or you can use symbolism and let listeners find their own meaning in your words.
Either way, your emotional truth must be there.
Whether you write:
A diary entry with chords
A character-driven narrative
A metaphor-laced poem
Make it real. Make it felt. That’s where the magic lives.
