So, here I am 17 years old, heading to Harlem to audition for Showtime at the Apollo TV show. I picked a song that I love, and knew really well. I auditioned and made the cut! The woman in charge suggested other songs for me. I thought that because I knew my song, and I’d rehearsed it over and over again, that it would be better for me than any of the other songs she suggested, so I stayed with my Stephanie Mills.

Doing something with passion, purpose and internal drive is an incredible experience. Being motivated by perfectionism is a paralyzing, fearful, white-knuckling it form of hell.

I struggle with time management, and it’s because I often get distracted and do whatever is in front of me. That can sometimes be something really menial that has no time constraint and it’s not really that important, but what happens is that I focus all my energy on that, and now I have taken the time away from doing the things that matter most or that are most pressing.

The most important thing is that everything created for your stage performance like merch, and artwork are spearheaded by you!
