Don’t Change My Style

music studio guitar voice coach artist

In my very first session with Regina Spector in New York City, she said to me “I don’t want to change my style.” And for sure, this is a number one concern artists have when they start training. Her phenomenal first album had already come out; she had a clear sense of who she was as an artist, and she didn’t want that changed.

Some vocal techniques, or at least,  the way they are taught would definitely change your style. There are people that think there’s only one way to sing, or a “right” way to sing, so everyone will be changed to that ideal. All of that person's clients will start to sound alike. However, the way I focus is 100% about helping the artist BE THEMSELVES, find their voice, and express it in their own unique way, all with good technique.

I remember when Regina told me that her writing changed from the work we did – now, I know that’s gonna happen because as we expand someone’s range and abilities, the writing expands, but to hear Regina, a songwriter I respect and admire so much, say that? It was still so moving and almost a surprise.

So,  what happened to her style? It did change. It expanded. Her sound didn’t change; if you listen to every record she’s made, it sounds more and more like her, if anything. Her style, evolving, growing, as she grows as an artist and a human and a singer. Her expression grows with her maturity and taste and  ever-growing abilities.

She still makes sound effects, but they’re more melodic and dynamic and executed with more finesse.

In fact, one time in a session, she asked “How do I do the sound effect so that I can still sing the next line?” And in all my years of teaching, she made me do something new, solve a unique question — I couldn’t ask for more! It was so fun.

Each record is consistently Regina, and at the same time a new version of Regina. Elevated, Expanded, Evolved.

I am so excited for her latest album, out June 24th! She brings so much magic and unique point of view into the world.

Be sure to Pre-save and/pre-order her album. You’re welcome ;)
