From not Feeling Good Enough to Unstoppable Confidence

I used to travel with my voice teacher at the age of 15 doing workshops and guest appearances on television shows throughout the country. He was a top coach in LA - taught the who’s who of music, and he would point towards me and say: “this is a great example of ‘the mix.’

I learned that I had to sing “right” and sing a certain way all the time. Falsetto was not an option - - that was “bad singing.” Can you imagine? No falsetto would mean no Barry Gibb, no Whitney Houston, Sam Smith, no Aaron Neville!

It really shifted my mindset and focus around music. This was probably due to a combination of things - being his primary example (he’d call me into a session he was having with JLo and have me sing a portion of an Aretha Franklin song), my character, being a teenager, and other tendencies I had towards perfectionism already – read my blog “I Quit!

Slowly but surely, I became incredibly good at technique. But, I was feeling less and less creative, less and less free, less and less expressive. There were specific songs I would sing to show off my mix-- other songs weren’t good enough. Focusing on being a good technician diminished my artistry and joy. I was lost.

It was a really long road back to my joy.

I had to let go of so much I thought was “right”, unlock my spirit again, try things just cuz I wanted to. I had to give up technique for a while, a long while.

At some point, I thought - technique isn’t bad. It’s amazing actually - it got me singing easier, higher, stronger, but I’ve got to use technique to SERVE ME, not to serve it. And I developed my own ways to do that.

This philosophy and processes became the cornerstone of my coaching.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, if you find yourself trying to sing, write, whatever your idea of what “singing” is, produce music… if you feel yourself focusing on pitch instead of telling your story, or you’re just too caught up in your own head, finding yourself generally stopped by perfectionism, sabotaged by your limiting beliefs and your mindset:

I have a solution for you!
