What’s My Signage?

Social media is the bane of so many music artist’s existence. You make MUSIC. Thoughtful, vulnerable, impassioned music and not 15 second capture attention try to go viral vignettes!

However,  social media is currently THE BUSINESS of music. The strongest way to grow your fan base.

So, how do you promote yourself and stay sane? How do you keep your integrity?

One thing is to consider that it’s not self promotion. It’s not about getting attention. It’s about giving. Every post is an opportunity to express who you are, what you’re about; share your message.

Find the HOW - how do I use this format to share who I am? How can I capture things I do with passion, my process + character?

One artist I work with is super into vintage clothing and has an incredible fahsion style. I suggested posting their thrifting adventures. Visuals of going to the stores, changing clothes, stylizing his wardrobe. Take it further - create a contest to go thrifting with you! Simple and authentic. How fun would that be to go on a thrifting afternoon with your favorite music artist + get styled?!!

Take what YOU love, things you do daily + share them. Find your unique way of capturing your process.

One thing that saves my social media self is shooting a ton of videos on one day. Then rolling them out all month. I would go nuts if I was shooting every day + feeling my life was spent giving it all away, not living it in the moment.

So what’s your signage? If you drive down the street you see signs for all kinds of businesses - the grocery, a Thai restaurant, a bike shop… and when you need something you’l remember the sign, the location and go to that business.

Think about yourself — your work, art, heart + the various talents you have is your signage. Social media is your store front. Let people know what’s inside + they’ll come back again and again to do business - for what you EMOTIONALLY PROVIDE.
